What it is and....who it's for?

Physical Therapy For Everyone

A construction worker with an injured back...a senior citizen with arthritis...an infant with a birth defect...an Olympic athlete...a person who has suffered a stroke...a child with a disability...a pregnant woman...an over stressed business executive... a diverse group of people, yet all in some way can benefit from physical therapy.

Making A Difference

Physical Therapy takes a personal and direct approach to meeting an individual's health needs and wants. Whether a patient's goal is walking independently or breaking a high jump record.

For people with health problems resulting from an injury or a disease, the physical therapist assists in the recovery process.  Physical therapy makes them stronger, relieves pain, and helps them to regain use of an affected limb, or to relearn activities of daily living such as walking, dressing, or bathing.

Physical therapists must teach patients and their families what to do so that the healing continues through self care at home.

The Physical Therapist Assistant

Physical Therapist Assistants work under the supervision of a Physical Therapist.   Their duties include assisting the Physical Therapist in implementing treatment programs according to their plan of care, training patients in exercises and activities of daily living, conducting treatments, using special equipment, administering modalities and other treatment procedures, and reporting to the Physical Therapist on the patient's responses.

Skills and Knowledge

The Physical Therapist is able to evaluate a patient's joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, functional ability, neurological, muscle tone reflexes, appearance and stability of walking, use of braces and artificial limbs, function of the heart and lungs, integrity of sensation and perception, performance of activities required in daily living, and developmental activities.

Physical therapy techniques include therapeutic exercise, joint mobilization, range of motion exercises, cardiovascular endurance training, relaxation exercises, therapeutic massage, bio feedback, activities of daily living training, wound debridement, pulmonary physical therapy, ambulation training, and same day custom orthotics.  Modalities include heat, traction, ultrasound, electrotherapy, and cryotherapy.  Hydrotherapy also can be applied during the treatment program.
