Emergency Room

The Emergency Department at Memorial Hospital of Texas County plays an essential role in caring for the urgent and emergent health needs of Guymon and the surrounding communities.

The emergency department was renovated in 1996, and since that time equipment has been updated to meet the changing medical needs. The Emergency Suite is comprised of eight rooms serving various purposes, but is available for a major accident or disaster.  There are two specially equipped rooms to care for a patient that has a life threatening emergency such as injuries from an auto accident or suffering from a heart attack or a stroke. Our other rooms are specially equipped for patients in need of stitches, and the setting of broken bones, and an OB/GYN room which is equipped with sexual assault kits, and is capable of accommodating emergency deliveries.

Our emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week with either a physician or physician assistant that is supported by a physician. On August 7, 2007 the hospital hired two physicians and two physician assistants to cover the emergency room. The Emergency Room is also staffed with 2 nurses 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The Emergency Room nurses are trained in Trauma, ACLS, PALS and other various skills. Other services that are readily available include respiratory therapy, laboratory technicians, and radiology technicians.

What to expect when you arrive at our emergency department.  First, you will be triaged by a qualified nurse. Triage is an examination that tells us how serious your medical condition is when you arrive. Some patients have more serious conditions than others. So triage helps us determine not only how to help each patient, but who to treat first.

We use the three level Triage system:

● Emergent – those who have life threatening illness or injury.

● Urgent – those who are in stable condition, but need help as soon as possible.

● Non-urgent – those who are in stable condition and require minimal treatment or medical attention.

When you request an examination in the Emergency Department, you will be screened to determine whether an emergency medical condition exists. If one does, you will receive stabilizing treatment.

If your condition is unstable, this hospital will not transfer you to another hospital unless the benefit of the transfer outweighs the risk. You will continue receiving stabilizing treatment if arrangements are being made to transfer you to another facility.
